Coup d’état- Golpe de Estado 06.28.09 Tegucigalpa ,Honduras

A coup d’état (pronounced /ˌkuːdeɪˈtɑː/ us dict: kōō′·dā·tâ′), or coup for short, is the sudden, unconstitutional deposition of a legitimate government, by a small group of the State Establishment — usually the military — to replace the deposed government with another, either civil or military. A coup d’état succeeds when the usurpers establish their legitimacy if the attacked government fail to thwart them, by allowing their (strategic, tactical, political) consolidation and then receiving the deposed government’s surrender; or the acquiescence of the populace and the non-participant military forces.

Typically, a coup d’état uses the extant government’s power to assume political control of the country. In Coup d’État: A Practical Handbook, military historian Edward Luttwak says: “A coup consists of the infiltration of a small, but critical, segment of the state apparatus, which is then used to displace the government from its control of the remainder”, thus, armed force (either military or paramilitary) is not a defining feature of a coup d’État.

HON. MP Peter Kent Office closed to Citizen’s

A group from the Latin American Solidarity Network ( Toronto)  came to the offices Hon. MP Peter Kent’s Thornhill office  at the 7600 Yonge St.  for a scheduled 12:30pm meeting with a representative .   As soon as they arrived a police car was waiting outside and a office worker rushed inside and immediately shut the door and put up a CLOSED Sign . When he came to the door he presented Peter Kent’s business card and said that the MP  was out of the country and a representative could be reached next week for a response . When asked further information he continued to his vehicle.

The group of over 40 people wgo continue to arrived to the offices  were asked not to come park in front of the property  by local police  as per orders by the management property.

The  group  gathered walking in picket line on the sidewalk holding , signs, banners and a Honduran Flag. ”

Jose Martinez  who is from Honduras and was in the city of  San Pedro de Sula on June 28th before  the coup as an outside international observor ,”What happnening is Honduras is very serious  as people are being presecuted , radio stations and anyone organizers offices are being destroyed by the military.Even reporters are going missing and some cases being expelled from the country like in the case of TELE sur and VTV crews

Honduras and has lived in Canada for many years is also very disappointed at the MP’s office for closing its doors , “It is  disrespectful the way our elected officials don;t even have the time for the citizen’s with serious concerns. What is happening in Honduras is very serious  as people are being killed , beaten  and any media condemming the coups their offices are being destroyed by the military. Even reporters are being beaten and some cases being expelled from the country like in the case of TELE sur and VTV crews” . Nora Noyala  who is from knows all to well what happens in when a countries democracy is overthrown , “We  want to show our support  for the Hondurn people  because as Latin American’s we all come from countries that have a dark history of coup d’etats and illegal overthrows of government .If you ask the people here we have people from Chile (  Sept 1973 coup) ,  Venezuelan ( 2000 coup) ,  Guatemalan (1954 coup), etc.

At 12:30pm they walked to the MP’s office and knocked on the door but no one answered. So they called the number  and got an answering machine and left a message at Kent’s Office.

Protestor’s behind shouted ,”Shmane on Peter Kent ! Shmane on Peter Kent !and we will be back! ”

They plan to return to his office and keep the pressure up for the government to take a stronger stand.

On June 28, 2009 democratically elected Honduran president Manuel Zelaya was overthrown by a military coup and the de facto government has categorically refused to allow his return to power, threatening instead to arrest him if he sets foot on Honduran soil. The coup has been condemned by the Organization of American States, the United Nations, Union of South American Nations (Unasur), the European Union and numerous others. A recent visit by an International Human Rights Commission composed of fifteen independent professionals was able to confirm the extrajudicial killing of several people who were part of the resistance against the coup as well as numerous other human rights violations.

In response to this intensified repression by the de facto military regime of Roberto Micheletti against the peaceful resistance movement in Honduras, the Latin American Solidarity Network (LASN) is sending a delegation to Honduras from Aug 27- Sept 7^th.

The objective of the delegation is to have a Canadian presence on the ground in Honduras to engage with various sectors of civil society that is in resistance to the de facto military regime. Upon returning to Canada, LASN will build links across Canada in support of the resistance movement in Honduras.  LASN will continue its pressure on the Canadian government to end its wait-and-see attitude toward the de facto military regime and to take concrete steps to pressure the de facto regime of Roberto Micheletti to restore President Zelaya.

The delegation will travel to Tegucigalpa and then to San Pedro Sula with the following objectives:

 

• Meet with community leaders and various social movements  to gather first hand testimony of the situation in the country
• Document the mass movement of resistance on the streets
  • Document the state repression against peaceful protests and opposition members
  • Write daily reports
  • Conduct journalism work
  • Meet with union and social movement leaders to strengthen links and partnerships for further solidarity efforts in Canada
    • Counter the misinformation about the coup d’état in the mainstream press
